Addressing Partner Inflicted Brain Injuries With a Healthy Equity Lens

Topic: Addressing Partner Inflicted Brain Injuries With a Healthy Equity Lens

Hosted By: Ohio Domestic Violence Network

Date/Time: Wednesday, February 1, 2023 4:00am ChST

Description: Research shows up to 92% of IPV survivors who experienced physical or sexual violence report head, neck, and facial injuries, which can result in brain injury (Valera et.al, 2022). Brain injuries as a result of domestic violence have long lasting impacts on a survivor’s health, wellbeing, safety, and even economic security. This webinar will bring together leading researchers and practitioners in the field to address Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) impacting individuals living with partner inflicted brain injuries (PIBI). It will provide participants with tools to advance health equity for individuals with PIBI.

Learning Objectives: As a result of this webinar participants will be able to: Understanding PIBI with an intersectional approach and how it impacts survivors overall health and wellbeing Using a health equity lens to identify services and resources providers can use to make their care more accessible to all survivors living with brain injury Learn about screening, identification, assessment, and education tools that can be used with survivors and staff in domestic violence organizations and community health centers

The Use of Technology to Stalk

Stalkers are creative criminals who use – and misuse – a variety of technologies to locate, surveil and monitor their victims. This session will address common technologies utilized by stalkers, discuss evidence preservation concerns as well as identify effective safety- planning strategies.

Coordinating the Response to Stalking

Keeping victims safe and holding offenders accountable requires that diverse professionals— including (but not limited to) victim advocates, law enforcement, prosecutors, educators and others—view their work through a “stalking lens”, take pro-active steps to incorporate a stalking response into their roles and work together. This session will provide practical strategies for building stalking into a coordinated community response.

Prosecuting Stalking Cases

Charging stalking is an effective tool for prosecutors to hold offenders accountable where they have engaged in a course of conduct putting the victim in fear for their safety and/or causing substantial emotional distress. This presentation will provide statutory analyses of Guam’s stalking and stalking-related statutes as well as discuss charging strategies to ensure that the reality of the victim’s experience is put before the fact finder. The presenter will also discuss the correlation between stalking and other forms of violence, combatting common defenses, the admission of digital evidence, and the importance of a collaborative approach to enhance victim safety and offender accountability.

The Intersection of Stalking and Human Trafficking

Human trafficking occurs when offenders identify, recruit, and exploit vulnerable individuals. In both labor and sex trafficking, offenders use a course of conduct, including force, fraud, and coercion to instill fear and inflict trauma on their victims. This presentation will explore the commonalities between stalking and human trafficking including tactics used by offenders to assert control, manipulate victims, and escape accountability. The presenter will provide strategies that investigators, prosecutors, and victim service professionals can employ to hold offenders accountable when they target and exploit vulnerable individuals.

Building College Prevention and Response Efforts

Stalking recognition and response should be integrated into awareness education, safety planning, and adjudication on college campuses and secondary schools. Though stalking victimization is prevalent among adolescents and young adults and covered under the Clery Act, stalking is rarely addressed on campuses to the same degree as intimate partner and/or sexual violence. This session discusses the dynamics of stalking among young adults and adolescents and highlights strategies, tools, and ready-to-use programs and activities to better integrate stalking into existing awareness efforts and elevate the public discourse on stalking.

Stalking Charges: An Opportunity, Not an Afterthought

Topic: Stalking Charges: An Opportunity, Not an Afterthought

Hosted By: AEquitas

Date/Time: FEB. 7, 2023 5:00AM ChST

Description: Stalking is pervasive. Everyday, victims suffer immeasurable fear and distress over repeated, unwanted, and threatening conduct directed at them by their stalkers. Despite the frequency of stalking and its profound impact on victims, offenders are rarely held accountable by the criminal justice system. Many reports from victims are only taken seriously once stalkers escalate their behaviors and cause significant property damage, physical harm, or death. Sometimes, even victims themselves are unable to identify stalking behaviors, largely due to narrow societal and media depictions of what constitutes stalking. In this webinar, participants will be challenged to adopt a new paradigm of offender behavior. By viewing an offender’s conduct against a victim through a holistic—rather than episodic—lens, participants will learn how stalking charges can provide the critical link between seemingly isolated instances. After discussing common stalking behaviors, which go far beyond pop culture stereotypes, presenters will discuss how criminal justice system actors and allied professionals can enhance their response, including methods for investigating and prosecuting stalking offenses. Instead of considering stalking crimes to be too complex or as an afterthought to other offenses, participants will view these charges as key to holding offenders accountable for the full scope of their criminality.
