Trauma Informed Expressive Arts Therapy Tools for Youth & Young Adults Community of Practice 3 Part Series

Topic: Trauma Informed Expressive Arts Therapy Tools for Youth & Young Adults Community of Practice 3 Part Series

Hosted By: Pacific Southwest: Mental Health Technology Transfer Center Network

Date/Time: Tuesday, February 9, 2022 at 9:00 AM ChST;
Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at 9:00 AM ChST;
Wednesday, March 23, 2022 at 8:00 AM ChST

Description: Using a trauma-informed lens, this Community of Practice series offers tools from Expressive Arts Therapy (EXA) for working with youth and young adults. Presenter Suraya Keating, MFT, REAT, RDT, will share a variety of multimodal arts practices that can be used to soothe the nervous system; promote self-awareness; and support the agency, empowerment, and well-being of youth and young adults. Simple interventions using visual arts, visualization, movement, creative writing, music, and theater will be introduced as embodied alternatives to talk therapy that are rooted in attuning to the unique needs and diverse background of each youth or young adult client. Each of the three trainings will focus on specialized forms of therapy and allow for in depth exercises, discussion and practice. All sessions are designed around the framework of the four most common trauma responses (fight, flight, freeze, and fawn), and a variety of effective bottom-up and top-down arts strategies will be incorporated to address each of these four responses.

Conflict De-escalation Training
Topic: Conflict De-escalation Training

Hosted By: Hollaback!

Date/Time: Thursday, February 10, 2022 at 5:00 AM ChST

Description: This training will address conflict de-escalation, which requires patience, a willingness to listen, and an inability to see the humanity in everyone, even those we don't agree with or who seek to hurt us. Using Hollaback!'s Observe-Breath-Connect methodology, we will learn how to identify potential conflict before it escalates using the "pyramid of escalation" and how to assess whether intervening is the right action. This webinar will also discuss specific biases that are increasing conflict, harassment, and violence during COVID-19 and the role of implict and explicit bias in conflict. Participants will also learn how to connect with others by validating and de-escalating their feelings -- even if you don't understand or agree with them.

Why Should We Care About the Science? Understanding the Impact of Sexual Assault on Victim Responses, Behaviors, and Memories

Topic: Why Should We Care About the Science? Understanding the Impact of Sexual Assault on Victim Responses, Behaviors, and Memories

Hosted By: End Violence Against Women International

Date/Time: Friday, February 11, 2022 at 4:00 AM ChST

Description: By applying a scientific understanding of trauma and trauma-informed interviewing principles, investigators can help victims to recall and share details about their sexual assault. These details will then guide the resulting investigation, including interviews with respondents and witnesses, other types of evidence, and corroborative information. Decision makers can piece these details together to compile a more comprehensive and evidence-based account of the sexual assault, and enhance case determinations.

The mask of Bondage: Post-Pandemic Challenges Prosecuting Human Trafficking: Tips and Trends

Topic: The mask of Bondage: Post-Pandemic Challenges Prosecuting Human Trafficking: Tips and Trends

Hosted By:  End Violence Against Women International

Date/Time: Friday, February 25, 2022, at 6:00 AM ChST

Description: This program will cover post-pandemic trends and developments regarding detection, documentation, and relational dynamics involved in human trafficking cases. The presenter will cover the unique and sensitive issues involved in working with human trafficking survivors who face a host of challenges during the pandemic, and often do not identify as “victims.” This program will include a discussion of modern-day victim-law enforcement interactions, pandemic trauma-bonding and other challenges faced by prosecutors currently handling such cases. In discussing the “invisible chains” that bind human trafficking victims, this program will include an in-depth examination of relational dynamics between human traffickers and their victims, which often masquerade as consensual relationships of love and affection. It will discuss the red flags that often fly under the radar, especially when everyone is masked and socially distanced, to be better able to recognize the signs of exploitation associated with this insidious crime.
