Unpacking Binary Systems of Sex and Gender
Tuesday, November 14, 2017 / 2:00-3:30 CT
Content: Have you been feeling erased by recent conversations about gender?  Have you wondered if you missed the meeting where we decided that sexism and transphobia were somehow two separate deals? Are you longing for a framework that links struggles for sexuality, gender and reproductive liberation for all people? Drawing on their nearly 25 years together in the Trans Liberation and anti-violence movements, Jake Fawcett and Connie Burk will unpack the dominant culture Binary System of Sex and Gender. They will discuss the mechanisms of this system, demonstrate how it relies on white supremacy, colonization and consumerism as much as heteropatriarchy, and discuss how the system creates and enforces rigid expectations for people of all genders and sexual orientations.

Presenter: Connie Burk, Executive Director of the NW Network of Bisexual, Trans, Lesbian, and Gay Survivors of Abuse
