Collaborative Solutions: Pitfalls of Housing Prioritization: Considerations of Power and Culture

Description: In community contexts with limited and inequitable long-term housing access, housing prioritization usually involves multiple community institutions coordinating the distribution of scarce housing resources to those in greatest need. Three key influential factors are fundamental to this process: 1) the power of identification, determining who is deemed deserving of a resource; 2) the power of choice, deciding what people get; and 3) the power of distribution, choosing how they get it. To facilitate the prioritization process, housing practitioners use assessments in an effort to ensure equitable resource distribution. Next in our Special Series on Coordinated Entry, this webinar will explore power-laden assumptions in the prioritization process and how it subsequently influences survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Presenters will describe the “pitfalls” of housing prioritization and will offer strategies to mitigate them.
