Description: Public concern about the threat posed by sex offenders has inspired legislation and policies designed to combat recidivism and sexual violence. The field of sex offender management and treatment has become increasingly complex in nature and continues to evolve with more emerging research and robust evidence that supports best practices. Sexual offender risk assessment has advanced greatly in the past 20 years. We now have actuarial or structured clinical instruments that help identify who we should be most concerned about regarding risk to reoffend. We know that effective community supervision and treatment of sex offenders while staying victim centered is the cornerstone of community safety and victim protection. The collaboration of treatment, supervision, law enforcement registration, and the community at large can increase the offender’s chances of a pro-social non-offending lifestyle.
