Topic: Choosing the Margins: Amplifying Indigenous Pasifika Voices and Stories in Violence Prevention Research and Advocacy

Hosted By: IVAT

Date: 10/15/2021

Time: 9:00 AM

Description: As advocates, practitioners and researchers in the movement to end intimate partner and gender-based violence, we enhance our understanding of this public health and human rights issue by collaborating with those who are most affected by this type of violence. By choosing the margins (hooks,1990; Smith, 2012). This webinar provides an overview of indigenous research methodologies and Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) principles reflected in the capacity-building efforts of Kanaka ʻŌiwi and Pasifika professionals and community members in addressing and preventing domestic violence in their respective communities. Three initiatives under the Asian Pacific Institute on Gender-Based Violence (API-GBV) centered on indigenous Pasifika languages, cultural dynamics and structures, and nurturing dialogue and connection across the Pasifika Diaspora, will be highlighted. Attendees will be provided with tangible ways to implement community-based, culturally responsive principles and practice in their violence prevention work.
