Date/Time:  Friday, November 4, 2022 at 6:00am - 7:30am ChST

Description: The Idaho Coalition Against Sexual & Domestic Violence presents: A live, online space with adrienne maree brown and Sonya Renee Taylor

Radical Permission: Acts of Liberation for a Safe(r) World Thursday, November 3, 2022 | 1:00 PT / 2:00MT / 3:00CT / 4:00ET

Join us for Radical Permission: Acts of Liberation for a Safe(r) World, a 90- minute conversation with Sonya Renee Taylor and adrienne maree brown.

This discussion is framed for advocates, activists, and organizers from movements against gender-based violence. Together, we will address how to tap into transformative practices that interrupt self-denial, scarcity, and harmreplication. This conversation will explore how to give ourselves permission to be our most whole, authentic, and divine selves. Our permission can allow our movements, as well as the many survivors we serve, to reclaim power, self- determination, and vibrance.

To practice waging liberation, we can offer ourselves the radical permission to wholly live our lives – including the work we engage in – rooted in our deepest YES. The YES that restores our divine nature, opening up a ripe potential for us to foster freedom. When we give ourselves increasing permission to practice freedom in real-time, we get closer to living in a world without gender-based violence. We inherently deserve a safe(r) world.

A Broader Sense of Justice: Respecting Victim Autonomy While Pursuing Offender Accountability in Sexual and Domestic Violence Cases

Topic: A Broader Sense of Justice: Respecting Victim Autonomy While Pursuing Offender Accountability in Sexual and Domestic Violence Cases

Hosted By: AEquita

Date/Time: Thursday, November 17, 2022 at 4:00am - 5:30am ChST

Description: Prosecutors seeking justice in crimes of sexual and domestic violence must often balance holding perpetrators accountable and valuing victim autonomy. Many victims are unable to participate in the prosecution for reasons including fear, ongoing trauma, love for or loyalty to the perpetrator, intimidation, financial harm, self-blame, or embarrassment. Reliving the traumatization of their sexual assault or domestic abuse while feeling like they are in the spotlight can be overwhelming and lead to reluctance to participate in the process. When this happens, the pressure to ensure offenders are fully prosecuted may tempt prosecutors to utilize more extreme methods such as material witness warrants or to seek body attachments or bench warrants— without full appreciation of the impact on the victim or a consideration of possible alternatives. This presentation will discuss the obstacles victims face when considering whether to participate in the prosecution of domestic violence or sexual assault and will suggest strategies that prosecutors can use to minimize these barriers to facilitate victim participation. Presenters will highlight the negative impacts that pre-trial detention and other next-level measures have on victims and on the community. In circumstances when victims are unable to participate, presenters will discuss possible alternatives for the prosecutor and considerations for balancing public safety risks with victim self-determination.

The Allstate Foundation Webinar Series: The Economic Impact of Social Determinants of Health

Topic: The Allstate Foundation Webinar Series: The Economic Impact of Social Determinants of Health

Hosted By: Allstate Foundation

Date/Time: Thursday, November 17, 2022 at 5:00am ChST

Description:  The economic impact of intimate partner violence can last years due to destroyed credit, lack of employment, and medical bills. But the economic challenges go beyond the abuse. Social Determinants of Health (SDH) can affect the financial stability for survivors – from lack of safe, affordable housing, to food insecurity and access, to education and job opportunities As a social determinant of health (SDH), domestic violence plays a role in the health and wellbeing of survivors even after leaving an abusive relationship; coupled with other SDHs, survivors are at an economic disadvantage. For some survivors, leaving an abusive relationship can lead to a loss of resources, including housing and health insurance, and lead to poverty. When survivors do not have access to safe, affordable housing they often return to an abusive partner.
In 2005, 50% of US cities surveyed reported that domestic violence is the primary cause of homelessness. Together, the lack of housing impacts the health and financial wellbeing of victims; lack of housing limits employment opportunities and the lack of housing negatively impacts physical and mental health. Beyond housing, SDHs are impacting survivors. For some, they may lack access to traditional grocery stores and pay more for food (neighborhood and built environment SDH). In many communities, schools are wildly underfunded due to redlining, tax structures, and low state investments leading to lower high school graduation levels and higher levels of health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and depression. Social Determinants of Health aren’t just impacting our physical and mental health but also our financial health, taking a toll on our overall quality of life and well-being.
