8 TOOLS TO MITIGATE IMPLICIT BIAS

Topic: 8 TOOLS TO MITIGATE IMPLICIT BIAS

Hosted By: Hollaback

Date: 8/20/2021

Time: 6:00 AM ChST

Description: Everyone holds implicit biases. That doesn’t make us “bad people,” it just means that we have work to do. This one-hour, interactive training will teach you how to understand and begin to undo your own implicit biases. We’ll start by learning the brain science behind implicit bias, and how the part of the brain that used to protect us now holds us back. Through polls, brief thought experiments, and journaling, we’ll reflect on how implicit bias can show up in our actions and the impacts those biases can have on ourselves and our teams. Then we’ll roll our sleeves up and get to work, practicing 8 concrete ways that you can begin to mitigate bias in your own life. You’ll leave more confident in your ability to see and mitigate bias.

HOUSTON COALITION AGAINST HATE/OCA-GREATER HOUSTON TRAINING – BYSTANDER INTERVENTION TO STOP HATE-BASED HARASSMENT

Topic: HOUSTON COALITION AGAINST HATE/OCA-GREATER HOUSTON TRAINING – BYSTANDER INTERVENTION TO STOP HATE-BASED HARASSMENT

Hosted By: Hollaback

Date: 8/20/2021

Time: 8:30 AM ChST

Description: Hate-based harassment has been on the rise in the US and the world. In this virtual workshop hosted on Zoom, we’ll learn how you can intervene effectively as a bystander without ever compromising your safety. This 1.5 hour, interactive training will teach you Hollaback!’s 5D’s of bystander intervention methodology. We’ll start by talking about the types of disrespect that many folks across all identities are facing right now — from microaggressions to violence — using a tool we call the “spectrum of disrespect.” You’ll learn what to look for and the positive impact that bystander intervention has on individuals and communities. We’ll talk through five strategies for intervention: distract, delegate, document, delay, and direct; and how to prioritize your own safety while intervening. We’ll have time at the end for practice, and you’ll leave feeling more confident intervening the next time you see hate-based harassment online or in person.
